PHASE 1 OF THE AUTHOR JOURNEY:
Create a few copies

It is easy to self-publish nowadays, and anyone with a couple of hundred pounds saved can convert their manuscript into a printed book. Indepublishing’s book “What do I have to do to get a book published!” will guide you on the alternatives.
Print-on-demand publishing is one popular route in, or you may choose a company that offers some basic editing and design support. For books with a low or irregular demand, this may remain the ideal route. For many other authors its limitations may prompt them to look to the next level.
In the real world of bookselling, there is a world which adheres to very rigid “industry standards” and “category fit”. Authors realise to compete more effectively they require a tighter edit and professional typesetting, a bespoke cover design with professionally written jacket copy. Given the introduction of added middlemen (wholesalers, distributors, booksellers), authors also calculate that they need a better margin which means investing in a longer print run.
You should, at this point, contact Indepublishing CIA to ensure you produce the highest quality self-published book.

PHASE 2 OF THE AUTHOR JOURNEY:
Re-launch with a longer print run

There are several very good self-publishing service companies which provide editing and bespoke jacket design, professional typesetting, jacket copywriting and a range of post-printing support such as distribution. Some companies offer reprinting, warehousing, invoicing and marketing support services.
Within 4-6 months, you will receive a high quality book that can compete effectively in its category – and during this time you should be reading “What do I have to do to sell a book!” which will help you to create a marketing plan with a focussed set of activities to maximise your sales opportunities.
After some months and a lot of legwork, the self-publishing author can manage to get it into a range of local booksellers. If it is good and gains word-of-mouth recommendation, it will sell well at a local or regional level, and now you seek to accelerate that success – but how?

PHASE 3 OF THE AUTHOR JOURNEY:
Actively promote to rights buyers

Contact Indepublishing CIA and we will assess your work and recommend a course of action. We may suggest a next step marketing plan to help you push the boundaries further, and/or we will offer an agreement to represent you as an agent, working on your behalf to sell the rights of your book.
We will prepare your book and re-launch plan then promote your title to our database of agents, scouts and media to help them find the best of the self-published books in the market place.
Your book will remain on the site for a guaranteed period of 12 months with an option to negotiate its continuing presence.

Before you start…

My first piece of advice is to Read the Guides; I mean this most genuinely and not for altruistic reasons. The 150,000 words contained in our two guides will bring you up to speed with a comprehensive understanding of publishing and bookselling today, informing you of the challenges you will face and where the real opportunities lie.
Should you come to me having read these two books, you will better understand any recommendations I may propose concerning you and your book. Remember, every book and author is unique and requires specific promotional activity. You will get far greater value for money if you understand many of the principles.

First approach

If you are looking for advice and guidance, or wish to approach us about representation, please download the Marketing Interview.pdf, fill this out and email it to me with your initial approach.
I will review it to understand where you are up to in your publishing plans, what you are seeking to create and what help you are looking for. If I believe I can add value to your book and current activities, I will then arrange a consultancy session which can be by phone (or Skype) or, if you live locally, we could meet up.

Up to this point, it has cost you nothing – except of course the price of two books!

Our charges

Indepublishing CIA charges £50 per hour or part thereof. The minimum suggested time is 4 hours which enables us to meet up for around 1½ hours. This is payable in advance by going to the Indebookshop site and at the bottom of the Categories listing is a section called Indepublishing CIA Payment Gateway. This is set in units of £1 so if you want to buy an initial 4 hour consultancy, key in 200 and then proceed through the payment instructions, using either credit card or Pay Pal.

What you receive back

During this consultation, I will “interrogate” you further on your book, questioning you indepth in order to advise you on how you should be communicating your book brand. During this time, I can also answer any questions you may have.
Following this discussion, I will write up my notes and provide you with an initial view on your book and author brand with a list of activities that you will need to cover off during the pre-launch and launch phase.

Going forward

You can choose. Some authors choose will choose to just “check-in” with us for a few hours each month or every couple of months, or even when they feel they have reached a road-block. Other authors may choose to book us on a retainer basis buying a pre-agreed number of hours per month to implement certain activities.

You can choose any of the below list of activities, but not all. The spirit of self-publishing is that it is what YOU the Author make it to be. It simply doesn’t work to appoint a 3rd party to do all the promotion and selling. You, the author, are the most potent selling tool. You know your subject better than anyone and are inherently more passionate about it.
The problem with mainstream publishing today, in my view, revolves largely around the fact that many unknown and mid-list authors are simply too far removed from the selling process.
